Bits and Pieces for Your Vehicle
If you have rented a vehicle, then the car rental company is responsible for keeping it running. If you get into an accident, then that's a separate issue. If you are on a road trip and vacation and something starts to sound funny, then you have to either pull over and call the auto club, or locate a nearby auto parts store. Fitting your car with a few accessories before you start on the trip will make everyone more comfortable. Also, make sure your air conditioner is in good working order and that your heater actually works. The latter is not necessary if you are taking a trip to the desert in the middle of Summer. Taking along a little cooler with a few soft drinks in it, plus a few snacks, helps keep everyone's energy up. You could also purchase a portable DVD player that can be used in a car, and that keeps the kids happy. If you stop for a rest then you can also watch a movie. This helps a lot of people fall asleep, because they are used to doing that at home in front of the TV. Replace your windshield wipers because if they fall off, then you won't be able to see if it rains.
